    Optimization of Tc-99m-sestamibi/I-123 subtraction SPECT/CT protocol for parathyroid scintigraphy

    The purpose of this study was to optimize effective, but technically challenging Tc-99m-sestamibi/I-123 subtraction SPECT/CT protocol for parathyroid scintigraphy. An anthropomorphic parathyroid phantom was set up using a small sphere, a thyroid phantom and a thorax phantom with clinical range of activities of 1231 and Tc-99m. SPECT/CT acquisitions were performed using three collimators (Low Energy High Resolution (LEHR), Low Energy Ultra High Resolution (LEUHR) and Medium Energy Low Penetration (MELP)) and two energy window settings. Images were reconstructed with a combination of four different numbers of iterations and with or without scatter correction. Images were subjected to visual and quantitative evaluation. The effect of collimator, energy window selection and reconstruction parameters had a significant effect on visual appearance and adenoma contrast in parathyroid Tc-99m-sestamibi/I-123 subtraction SPECT/CT. Symmetrical energy windows and ultra-high resolution collimator yielded best results with some improvement with scatter correction.Peer reviewe

    Shot Noise with Interaction Effects in Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes

    We have measured shot noise in single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) with good contacts at 4.2 K at low frequencies (f=600850f=600 - 850 MHz). We find a strong modulation of shot noise over the Fabry-Perot pattern; in terms of differential Fano factor the variation ranges over 0.4 - 1.2. The shot noise variation, in combination with differential conductance, is analyzed using two (spin-degenerate) modes with different, energy-dependent transmission coefficients. No power law dependence of shot noise, as expected for Luttinger liquids, was found in our measurements.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Catalyst-free growth of In(As)P nanowires on silicon

    The catalyst-free metal organic vapor phase epitaxialgrowth of In(As)P nanowires on silicon substrates is investigated using in situ deposited In droplets as seeds for nanowiregrowth. The thin substrate native oxide is found to play a crucial role in the nanowire formation. The structure of the nanowires is characterized by photoluminescence and electron microscopy measurements. The crystal structure of the InPnanowires is wurtzite with its c axis perpendicular to the nanowire axis. Adding arsenic precursor to the gas phase during growth results in a bimodal photoluminescence spectrum exhibiting peak at the InAsP and InP band gap energies.Peer reviewe

    Enhanced luminescence from catalyst-free grown InP nanowires

    The surface effects in the optical properties of catalyst-free grownInPnanowires are investigated. Both as-grown nanowires and nanowires treated with hydrofluoric acid are studied using low- and room-temperature continuous-wave and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements and transmission electron microscopy. It is shown that the room-temperature photoluminescence intensity is increased by two orders of magnitude after the surface treatment, and that there is also a significant increase in the double-exponential photoluminescence decay time.Peer reviewe

    Determination of helicities in unidirectional assemblies of graphitic or graphiticlike tubular structures

    Here we propose a universal method for the determination of all helicities present in unidirectional assemblies of hexagon-based graphitic or graphiticlike tubular structures, e.g., multiwalled or bundled carbon nanotubes(CNTs) or boron-nitride nanotubes and their structural analogs. A critical dimension characteristic of a fundamental structural property, i.e., the atomic bond length, is discerned from electron diffraction patterns by which all helicities present in the assemblies are identified. Using this method, we determine the helicity population in a single-walled CNT sample produced by laser ablation technique.Peer reviewe

    Measurements of shot noise in single walled carbon nanotubes

    We have measured shot noise in single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) at 4.2K over frequencies f = 600 – 850 MHz. Here we report results obtained on shot noise without DC bias by applying an AC modulation at ω0 and recording the noise variation at 2ω0: the Fano factor is obtained by extrapolating down to zero excitation amplitude. We also discuss the applicability of this method in samples which have strongly non‐linear IV characteristics like carbon nanotubes. The obtained results are compared with regular differential noise measurements where both DC and AC bias are employed.Peer reviewe

    Dairy producer attitudes to pain in cattle in relation to disbudding calves

    Pain is an important indicator of poor welfare of livestock. Despite this, pain has largely gone unrecognized in farm animals due to attitudes of producers and veterinarians, although they play a key role in monitoring and managing the perception of animal pain. Producer attitudes toward animal welfare influence livestock management and production. The aim was to quantify dairy producer attitudes to the painfulness of various cattle diseases and disbudding, a painful routine procedure performed on farm to ensure safer handling of cattle. A questionnaire on disbudding-related opinions and practices was sent to 1,000 Finnish dairy producers (response rate: 45%). Attitudes toward disbudding were gauged using a 5-point Likert scale and attitudes to cattle pain scored on an 11-point numerical rating scale. Principal components analysis was used to assess the loadings, which were further tested for differences between producer gender and housing systems with Mann-Whitney U-tests, and between herd milk yield, herd size, and age and work experience of producers with a Kruskal-Wallis test. Four main factors were identified: factor I (“taking disbudding pain seriously”), factor II (“sensitivity to pain caused by cattle diseases”), factor III (“ready to medicate calves myself”), and factor IV (“pro horns”). Female producers took disbudding pain more seriously, were more sensitive to pain caused to cattle by diseases, and were more ready to medicate disbudded calves than male producers. Producers with tie-stalls favored horns over producers with freestalls. Male producers with tie-stalls were sensitive to cattle pain and preferred horns over male producers with freestalls. Female producers with freestalls were more ready to medicate calves, but did not prefer horns more than female producers with tie-stalls. Taking disbudding seriously correlated with sensitivity to pain caused by cattle diseases. Producers with low-milk-yielding herds were less willing to medicate calves and more willing to keep cattle with horns than producers with higher-yielding herds. Older producers were more sensitive to cattle pain than middle-aged and younger producers. No effect was established for taking disbudding pain seriously: the pro-horn factor was associated with work experience, age, and herd size. Women rated pain higher and were more positive toward pain medication for animals than men. Maintaining horns are more important for producers with tie-stalls than for those with freestalls.Peer reviewe

    Quantum Conductance of the Single Electron Transistor

    The quantum conductance of the single-electron tunneling (SET) transistor is investigated in this paper by the functional integral approach. The formalism is valid for arbitrary tunnel resistance of the junctions forming the SET transistor at any temperature. The path integrals are evaluated by the semiclassical method to yield an explicit non-perturbation form of the quantum conductance of the SET transistor. An anomaly of the quantum conductance is found if the tunnel resistances are much smaller than the quantum resistance.     Identification of vacancy defects in compound semiconductors by core-electron annihilation: Application to InP

    We show that the Doppler broadening of positron annihilation radiation can be used in the identification of vacancy defects in compound semiconductors. Annihilation of trapped positrons with surrounding core electrons reveals chemical information that becomes visible when the experimental backgorund is reduced by the coincidence technique. We also present a simple calculational scheme to predict the high-momentum part of the annihilation line. The utility of the method is demonstrated by providing results for vacancies in InP. In electron irradiated InP the isolated In and P vacancies are distinguished from each other by the magnitude of the core-electron annihilation. In heavily Zn-doped InP we detect a native vacancy defect and identify it to a P vacancy decorated by Zn atoms.Peer reviewe

    Identification of Vacancy-Impurity Complexes in Highly n-Type Si

    We show that the detailed atomic structure of vacancy-impurity complexes in Si can be experimentally determined by combining positron lifetime and electron momentum distribution measurements. The vacancies complexed with a single impurity, V−P and V−As, are identified in electron irradiated Si. The formation of native vacancy defects is observed in highly As-doped Si at the doping level of 1020cm−3. The defects are identified as monovacancies surrounded by three As atoms. The formation of a V−As3 complex is consistent with the theoretical descriptions of As diffusion and electrical deactivation in highly As-doped Si.Peer reviewe
